Something Amazing is Coming

The Everyday Marksman forum launched nearly a year ago. In that time, we’ve learned a lot about one another and running a small tightknit community. Now it’s time for the next evolution, a brand new place for you to connect with other marksmen just like you online and in the real world. It’s almost ready, and it’s going to be an invitation-only affair. But now is your chance to get on the waiting list and get invited the day the doors open up.

I can’t wait to show you more.

Alrighty, let's do this. Today is day 1. I totally forgot to start off the day with pushups, so everything had to happen after lunch. I didn't figure that would be a problem since I was used to doing 50-60 pushups at a time while on active duty.

Well, I should have taken my own advice. The full hand-release pushup is quite a bit more effort than my old Air Force regulation pushup. I'll have to do a better job spreading it throughout the day going forward.

But, with that said, Day 1 is down and 100 pushups are in the bag.

The hand release pushups can be quite deceiving. You can get into a rhythm doing normal pushups but the hand release makes that impossible really. They're like fully extended pullups and force you to kind of reset after every rep.

Day 2

another 100 down. I figured out a cadence that works for me. 25 reps done four times. The first is as soon as I get out of bed, second is before heading to work, third is after work, and fourth is before bed.

There is definitely some fatigue and a touch of soreness setting in. I’m certainly feeling the lack of workouts since kiddo was born.

Day 3

The soreness subsided, I’m hitting the groove now. Another 100 done.

Just finished day 4.  I think the video showing the hand-release pushups said they were about "30%" more difficult than regular ones... I'd make that 50% more based on how it feels for me.  I'm doing sets of 20-25 of them spread out over an hour or so.

Day 5 done.

The 25/25/25/25 split is working well, though I admit today got off to a later start.

@xsquidgator the full hand release really does feel like a lot more effort. but I notice they are getting easier as I go. I might start doing more per set during week 2 and then ramp up again for each week after. We’ll see.

Day 6

100 more down. Same pattern as yesterday.

I realize that daily check-ins are not required for this challenge, but I feel like it helps keep me accountable.

Day 7 down.

I even tried to get some of the folks at work to do a set of 25 with me at the end of the day. I had one taker. They were certainly intimidated by the hand release style.

If you don't mind, for my own curiosity I'd like to solicit you or anyone reaching the goal of doing a single set of 100 by Day 30 to take part in an experiment. To continue one more day into Day 31 and do a single set of 100 "regular" pushups and share your results. Now I'm not talking about what people call a pushup nowadays where the person looks like a letter T from overhead but the WW2 style I've described before with palms under the shoulders and elbows pointing straight back. I want to compare the level of difficulty of them against hand release pushups.

@john_simpson

Sure thing!

The elbows directly to the rear of that style pushup are the biggest challenge for me. That's very tricep-focused, and the leverage on my long arms is a lot more difficult. I had several friends in the Air Force who had fairly short arms and much preferred that style of pushup since it let them "bounce" on their triceps over a limited range of motion.

Day 9 done.

I had a late start to it all, and just felt like I was playing catch-up in the evening to get it done. But done it is.

Forgot to lost last night during the hustle, but day 10 is done.

tops of the shoulders are feeling it way more now, which seems odd. I did change up the form a little bit, which might contribute.
